Testimonials:
Matt has really set the bar for what an excellent coach is. I wouldn't go to anyone else, especially given that Matt can spot what's wrong with your swim in 0.3 seconds. Not only did he teach me how to swim within a few months but he was a pivotal part in my first couple of open water races, one being an Ironman 70.3. Beyond the technicalities, Matt approached my anxieties in the most professional and nicest way. I always felt 10x better after a session with him which is why he's still my coach a year later! I couldn't recommend him enough - SophieI first met Matt in 2023, at the age of 41 and having never been able to swim, my first lesson was spent holding onto the side and putting my face in the water. Too much rugby also meant too many injuries and the swimming technique of someone trying to escape a particularly aggressive wasp. Now, thanks entirely to Matt and his brilliant coaching and encouragement, I'm a confident, competent swimmer who can cross the pool with ease.
What makes him exceptional isn't just his skill - though that's obvious - it's his mix of patience, humour, coaching ability and timing. He always knows when to challenge me, reassure me or when to crack a joke so perfectly placed that I'd forget I was supposed to be terrified of water.
He broke everything down into simple, achievable steps, celebrated every tiny milestone, and never once made me feel inadequate- even when I was thinking that myself. Learning to swim has opened up a new part of life for me, different exercise, motivation, pride and I'm incredibly grateful because none of that would have been possible without Matt.
If you're looking for a coach who can turn fear into confidence, and inadequacy into competence - and do it with kindness, clarity and a good laugh - you will not find anyone better - HywelGood teachers are those who help find strengths, wipe away tears, overpower demons and conquer fears. If I told my childhood self that I would voluntarily go for regular swimming lessons I wouldn't have believed it because of the majority of my life, I have carried a crippling fear of water after a near drowning accident when I was quite young. I had essentially resigned myself to a lifetime in which myself and the water wouldn't mix. It wasn't until Matt came on the scene that I felt I could really give swimming an honest try. He thoughtfully coached me through both the mental and physical challenges helping me to feel supported and elevated through each step of the process which I feel is quite a rare skill, especially to a nervous adult learner. I've happily gone from bubbles to proper swimming drills over the course of two years! So if you're looking to start from scratch like me, or looking to level up your current skill set, look no further than Matt for all your swim instruction needs - Katie
